overnight rail travel Paris to Venice, Italy

I am wondering how much it might cost to book a sleeping berth when we get to Paris, rather than book ahead before we leave Canada.

With a 1st class railpass, it will cost 42.00 cdn for a 2nd class 6 bed compartment, and 108.00 cdn for a 1st class 3 bed compartment.

I%26#39;ve heard it%26#39;s cheaper to reserve from Europe but not sure how much - we might be taking a chance on getting a bed if we wait since we arrive in Paris the morning of June 24 and want the overnight train for June 26.

Any suggestions? And is getting the 3 bed compartment worth the extra expense?

Thanks!

I%26#39;d book ahead of time if you can. I%26#39;ve taken the Bordeaux-Venice route, and we switched to Trenitalia at Nice which was where we had the sleeping berth. There were three of us, and we booked the three berth cabin and were glad of it. On the way back we had six berth cabin, and it was far more difficult to sleep with three strangers snoring away. The 1st class ones went very quickly (we reserved ahead of time for the way out, but weren%26#39;t certain of return date so lost the better cabin on the way back).
