First stages of planning our trip in 2009....

....but since I am the %26quot;OCD Trip Planner,%26quot; it is my obligation to start as soon as possible, lol.

Anyway, I%26#39;ve stared searching, but feeling kind of overwhelmed. So if anyone can help us narrow down our choices we would greatly appreciate it!

Here is a summary of who we are %26amp; what we are looking for:

BASICS: 3 adult men, in France late April/early May of 2009. First, 3 days in Paris, then rent a car and drive south for 5-6 days, before flying to Greece. While we have all been to Paris before, none of us have been to Provence.

INTERESTS: primarily, touring ancient Roman ruins, but also touring vineyards, as well as any other historic/interesting sites of the area. We are NOT interested in shopping, antiques, or, for the most part, museums (we%26#39;ll do plenty of that while in Paris). Also, since we will have a car, day trips to Arles, Orange, Avignon, etc., should not be a problem.

LOCATION (our biggest quandary): since we will be spending the following week in Greece, we would prefer something more mountainous for this part of the journey. Also, we are thinking that we would rather stay in a smaller village, but not anything too small (at least a couple of restaurants, pubs, etc.), and not too isolated (so we can more easily take our day trips).

DETAILS:

1. We want a house or apartment, as opposed to a hotel or B %26amp; B.

2. Size: we would prefer at least 2 bedrooms, with maybe a sofa bed for the 3rd person, although 2 twin beds in one of the bedrooms would also work. One bathroom is okay, but 2 would be better.

3. We are not looking for anything %26#39;luxurious (no flat-screen t.v%26#39;s., fancy bed linens, %26amp; appliances, etc.) What we have in mind is something simple %26amp; rustic, free-standing, and that also has a terrace with some kind of view. In summary, we would like to have a nice place to come home to each evening, where we can relax and enjoy a few glasses of wine.

4. Costs: we are budgeting about $1,500 - $2,000 for lodging for the week, but this is flexible. Since we will not be there the whole 7 days, something with daily rates would be preferable.

Again, any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

We stayed in a village house in Menerbes for two weeks in September 2004 and had a great time. With your budget you should have no problem finding a nice rental. Menerbes has several restaurants, but is less touristy than many of the other villages in the Luberon. We ended up eating lunch out on our excursions, and mostly cooking dinner in with what we picked up at the markets.

Any of the other nearby towns are also nice - LaCoste, Rousillon, Bonnieux, Gordes, Opede, etc.; some a little busier than others.

Day trips to Arles, Aix, Avignon, Vaison-la-Romaine, Pont du Gard, Uzes, St. Remy, Cassis, etc. we managed easily from Menerbes. We did get a little tired of driving through Cavaillon every time we went west.

Good luck, and from one OCD to another, it%26#39;s never to early to plan.

Can%26#39;t vouch for it yet, but this website whets my planning appetite: www.theluberon.com/index.htm

The Luberon isn%26#39;t all that large. You%26#39;ll have many choices for drinking and dining within an easy drive of wherever you stay.

We%26#39;re beginning to think of %26#39;09 already...

Thanks guys for the feedback....I have already found the link that Tex sent to be quite useful.

And I am glad to know I am not only OCD trip-planner, lol.
