Galerie Raoul Dufy, Nice

Hi, in the DK guide book to Provence and the Cote d%26#39;Azur, it briefly mentions that there is a Galerie Raoul Dufy in Nice, situated along the Quai des Etats-Unis. However, I have failed to find any further information on this. Can anybody tell me if they have been to this gallery, and if it is worth the visit? I am a huge fan of Raoul Dufy%26#39;s works. Many thanks.

I *think* the gallery your guide refers to, is one of two small (and free) galleries just outside the Cours Saleya on the quai des Etats Uni. Although it%26#39;s called the Musee R Dufy, it is used for small temporary exhibitions - the last one I went to showed the art work and installations associated with the new tram system - I%26#39;ve never seen any R Dufy work exhibited there. I understand that some of his work is permanently exhibited at the Musee des Beaux-Arts, the Fine Arts Museum at 33 Ave des Baumettes - I would go there.

The location and inspiration for Raoul Dufy%26#39;s %26#39;Nice in May%26#39; is at the back of the Old Town in a building called La Treille. It%26#39;s worth a look. Turn off rue Pairoliere in the Old Town and head for St Augustin Church, you%26#39;ll pass La Treille on the way.

Since about October 2006, La Treille has been a centre of information about historic Old Nice, with guides to the churches, walks based around the Old Town etc. It%26#39;s open most afternoons and you can pop in and pick up a couple of leaflets for self-guided tours and to find out information about guided tours for example, there is a tour that concentrate on Baroque churches in Nice. I think many of these will be French commentary only.

Ok great, thanks a lot for your help. I will have to check out the Musée des Beaux Arts as well as La Treille to see Dufy%26#39;s works and the inspiration behind them.

I am also planning on going to Musée Matisse, Musée Chagall and the Musée d%26#39;Art Contemporain. Are there any other galleries that would be worth a visit?

Many thanks.

In Nice, stroll up rue Droite in the Old Town - lots of small art galleries and ataliers, the artists are often at work.

The Chagall, Matisse and MAMAC are very good, you can see the Chagall/Matisse on the same day if you%26#39;re organised - the bus ticket offers free transport btween the 2 museums (the no 17 I think) Check on lignedazur. Also check the closing day for these two museums - they are during the week and not the same day I think.

I would try and make the trip to St Paul de Vence for the modern art gallery the Fondation Maeght - it really is wonderful. There is a permanent collection and a new exhibition every year - some years are more succesful than others - don%26#39;t know what this year%26#39;s offering will be. You need the 400 bus from Nice, the gallery is outside the walled town. There%26#39;s plenty of galleries within the town too plus all the famous art on display in La Colombe d%26#39;Or - I recommend you book lunch here.

Ok thanks for the advice; I will try and organise a trip to the Foundation Maeght at Saint Paul de Vence. Big fan of modern art here! Do you happen to know which bus to take from Nice to get there?

Thanks
