Hi,
We are planning a road trip from Avignon to Menton - mainly along N98 through the Riviera - July 3-8.
Some of our stays along the route are near St Tropez, Cannes, Nice, etc.
Does anyone have any recommendations on top sights to see-- we are less touristy, active, outdoor people (not so much museums, etc) - and prefer less crowded, local spots to experience more of the local culture and beauty...Its ok if it is off the beaten path a bit.
Any advice would be very much appreciated... Many Thanks!

My twenty-year-old daughter and I recently traveled from the Cinque Terre in Italy to Provence. We spent two nights in the village of Cassis (near Marseille). We thoroughly enjoyed our two days there. We ate, drank, took the short cruise to see the Calanques. There are wonderful hiking trails, high cliffs, gorgeous scenery.
We also stopped for lunch in Cannes on the first day of the 2008 film festival. We were disappointed in the beach resort (too touristy, too %26quot;rich%26quot; for our tastes).
Two years ago, on a Sunday afternoon, we enjoyed a day trip from Nice to St. Paul de Vence, a lovely perched village about a half hour from Nice. We shopped, ate, watched the men of the village play Boules. The scenery is beautiful also.
We also enjoyed from Nice driving through the George de Dalius (rocky gorge). Unfortunately, our plans to drive around the Gorges du Loup to the perched village of Gourdon had to be cancelled when we encountered (in March) a freak hail/sleet storm that covered the ground in about two inches of ice in less than 15 minutes. That village is still in my future plans!
None of these ideas may interest you, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves; my mother accompanied us two years ago, and she said she made %26quot;nursing home memories.%26quot;

If you enjoy nature hikes, I have a long list of favorites in the area between Hyères and Cannes (I run a hiking group in the region).
The region%26#39;s hiking paths are not all that well-known, yet they%26#39;re fantastic for sight-seeing outside of the classic route. Some of favorites include: the Hyères islands, the St Tropez peninsula, the Esterel Mountains right west of Cannes. You%26#39;ll be crossing through all three areas. I recommend you pick one of these areas and explore it with one or two half-day hikes. We have lots of information about these hikes on http://azuralive.com or drop me a line if you need details about any particular one.

Great thanks to both of you for all the recommendations!
Azuralive- I already checked out your hikes and printed out several notes. We will definitely hike atleast one of them while we are in the area.
Are there any other %26quot;musts%26quot; while we are between St Tropez and Monaco?
Where is a good place to stay near St Tropez -- nice, but not outrageous in price? I looked at Le Mouillage - but it is booked. Any recommendations?
Any favorite restaurants or people watching spots along the Quai/Port in St Tropez and Cannes? Any small quaint villages that are a must stop-- to avoide tourists and congestion?
Sorry to bombard with many questions... any help is great.
Thanks again, ashleigh
