Driving licence

We are flying from Hong Kong to Nice next Wed and we are planning to drive. Do we need an international driving licence in order to rent a car? Thanks.

You need to get an International Driver%26#39;s Permit. Go to the HK Transport Department at Admiralty with 2 pictures. Fill in an application and you will get it in 10 minutes. The cost is HK$80 and it%26#39;s good for one year.

I have rented cars in many countries and have never had anything but my UK licence. Are there particular countries that require an international licence or does it depend on your home country?

It may be different with Hong Kong drivers licenses than US, but all my guide books say that an international drivers license is not required in France, though it is suggested. We%26#39;re getting one just in case.

US drivers don%26#39;t need an IDL, but of course get one if you want one. Rental car companies don%26#39;t require it.
