New Years Eve in Paris?

Hi,

I will be in Vienna for Christmas but was thinking of going to Paris or London for New Years Eve. I haven%26#39;t decided yet and was wondering about the following:

Would I need to book a good (location %26amp; quality) hotel in Paris now, or could I wait until just before New Years? I would want to be near the Eiffel Tower for the fireworks and don%26#39;t want to worry about trying to find transport to get back to the hotel.

What is the best way to get to Paris from Vienna? I don%26#39;t really like to fly but I am thinking we may have to due to the distance and time constraints.

Public holidays - how do they affect public transport, restaurants?

Any tips for New Years in Paris are appreciated.

Paris doesn%26#39;t usually have fireworks on New Year%26#39;s Eve. The exception was the millenium celebration in 2000. Things could change but I wouldn%26#39;t make plans if seeing the fireworks was important to you.

Make your reservations as soon as possible. The holidays are one of many popular times to come to Paris. The Champs du Mars is crowded with lots of people hoping to see the tower twinkle at midnight.

I thought the fireworks are at Champs Elysees but there are most certainly some displays that night.

The metros run a bit later that night and are free.

Paris to Vienna, not sure how long that would be by train? anyone else? But if you do fly make sure you know which airport you are flying into and transportation.
