Visiting Versailles

I am reviewing a couple of postings about Versaille and I am a bit confused. Would someone explain what a visit to Versaille entails? Is this an all day affair. Do we need to purchase tickets in advance, and if so what tickets do we purchase?

We wanted to picnic outside one day in Paris. Would the gardens at Versaille be a good option or is there another garden/location someone recommends?

Thank you.

Versaille was almost a disaster for us.

First: We took the RER C departing from Pont de L%26#39; Alma. The RER train is much, much shorter than a metro train, don%26#39;t stand %26quot;down the track%26quot; as you might for a metro line.

#2 You must verify your route and train time to Versailles: the RER C forks at avenue du Kennedy and goes north and away from Versailles. I am trying to say that the RER C is not like the metro, just because you get on the train does not mean it will take you to the destination.

Picnic in Paris:

WOW...well if it was me...I would stop at any store and get sandwich stuff and go to Champs De Mars, lay in the grass

Our trip to Versailles was a great experience last summer.

We were with a group so we did not have to use public transportation.

Our trip was this. We did have advance purchase tickets. I would suggest that and the audio tour.

The tour is through the palace including the chapel and the theater. You can go through at your own pace. I would allow ~ two hours to really soak it in. After the palace you have the gardens. Walk down to the canal and have an artisan glace. If you have time go out to the Trianon and the Petite Trianon. Go to the website www.chateauversailles.fr It has comprehensive maps and info. If you ahve any interest in archtitecture, Decorative Arts, Marie Antoinette, etc it is not to be missed. I hope you enjoy

Versailles is potentially an all day affair depending on your interest in the chateau buildings, French history and the gardens surrounding the chateau. We usually recommend to our visitors to Paris that they go to Versailles in the morning, tour the chateau, take a walk in the gardens, and if that all happens in just a few hours, have a plan-B for the rest of the day because the trains back to Paris are so frequent. The cost of the train travel is trivial and the trains leave every few minutes all morning and afternoon. You don%26#39;t need to have advance tickets for any of it but you can save a lot of standing in line if you buy a %26quot;package%26quot; train/chateau bundle from the RER ticket booth.

Versailles is not the place to picnic if you mean spreading out a blanket and relaxing. The gardens are formal French gardens (keep off the grass) and the crowds can be stifling. I%26#39;ve read there are designated picnic areas but haven%26#39;t personally seen them.

There are other places that are fantastic picnic parks but not Versailles IMO. Our two favorites are the parc-de-Sceaux and the bois de Vincennes around the lac de Saint-Mandé, both easy to get to on the Métro and RER.

Why do people on the Paris forum get so snippy? (See above). I don%26#39;t see this behavior on the Austria or Italy Forums hardly ever.

And before any Parisian on here gets offended, let me say that it%26#39;s never coming from a resident of Paris or even France for that matter.

People make mistakes or may not have the experience of riding Metros AT ALL. I don%26#39;t think there should be any backlash for someone saying, hey, I messed up...be careful you don%26#39;t do the same thing.

I%26#39;m sorry, but I think some of the comments on this Forum are really rude and unwarranted.

Maybe all of the people thinking Parisians are rude are confusing them with sarcastic, rude people from America and England. No wonder we are so unfavored in Europe.

We really didn%26#39;t enjoy Versailles.

Even though we had Museum Passes (which covered entry and was supposed to give you priority entry) we queued for what seemed to be hours, it was really crowded and the hall of mirrors was closed for restoration.

The gardens were pretty enough, but there%26#39;s so much to see and do in Paris I wouldn%26#39;t bother making the trip.

The Parc du Champ de Mars is a great place for a picnic - as was the Bois de Boulogne. You can rent a boat and go for a row on the lake, with the Eiffel Tower in view.

We went to Versailles last Sunday, and the Museum Pass did *not* allow us to bypass the line of about 750 people to get into the palace. We had to wait an hour or more. While we did avoid a line of about 200 people to get a palace ticket, we also had to stand in a 100 person line to get a ticket to the gardens.

Apparently it%26#39;s due to current construction that there is no more line-jumping at Versailles with a Museum Pass.

1BCTraveler, was your invective directed at the OP, the poster who appropriately pointed out the condescending tone of a certain response, or was it just a rant against lazy posters in general?
