Paris in three days

My wife and I are arriving by train on Saturday for a quick three day visit. What do you suggest for first time visitors that want a little sightseeing taste of Paris? Questions include:

1. What area of the city should we focus for lodgings?

2. Are package tours preferable for non-French speakers?

3. I assume a public transportation pass is the way to get around.

4. We%26#39;re interested in major sites and the key museums.

Any information would be helpful, Thanks.

You want a hotel for THIS Saturday, 4 days from now? Yikes!

Here%26#39;s what you do for planning:

1. go to either/both Fodors.com and Frommers.com, pull Paris info found under %26quot;Destinations%26quot; sections. Hopefully, there is a %26quot;Top Ten%26quot; list or something like that.

2. go to the Overview section of this website (Tripadvisor, Paris) and print off any pertinent articles that members have written

3. in Paris, go first to the tourist office at 1 place Pyramides and get the sightseeing booklet and map.

4. in any metro station, go to the ticket window and buy a %26#39;carnet%26#39; (kar-nay) which is 10 single tickets, usable on the metro and the bus systems. You can split up the tickets, and just buy more if you need to.

good luck with the hotel booking - be sure to check against the hotel reviews before you commit.

As someone who organises these things about a year in advance, I%26#39;m with travelnutty: Yikes!!!

The best places to stay are the Ile St Louis, the Ile de la Cite, the Marais, the Latin Quarter and Saint Germain des Pres.

Try www.parisaddress.com (which has an availability calendar) for apartments still available. The gorgeous-looking BELL 12 apartment ideally located on the Ile St Louis is still available for that period. But that%26#39;s likely because it%26#39;s a new property and still to build a clientele.

We hate package tours of any kind – but each to their own.

With only 3 days, a %26quot;carnet%26quot; (book of 10 tickets) is likely to be your best public transport bet.

Check out the Paris Museum Pass site for the passes available (2, 4 and 6 days), price, and also %26quot;practical information%26quot; such as opening times of the museums and monuments covered.
